The United Farm Workers have started an ingenious campaign to help U.S. workers find work in the agricultural sector. Are you unemployed? Do you need a job? Are you willing to work? The United Farm Workers will help you find work on its website.

One Warning: Job may include using hand tools such as knives, hoes, shovels, etc. Duties may include tilling the soil, transplanting, weeding, thinning, picking, cutting, sorting & packing of harvested produce. May set up & operate irrigation equip. Work is performed outside in all weather conditions (Summertime 90+ degree weather) & is physically demanding requiring workers to bend, stoop, lift & carry up to 50 lbs on a regular basis.

Many Americans claim that the US does not need immigration reform and that undocumented immigrants are only taking jobs away from American workers. Here is a chance for those Americans to fight back and take back an American job. According to the clip below, so far a total of three Americans have taken back an American job.

However, one of the bills in the House that would create a Startup visa has drawn the scrutiny of a well-known blogger, Jeff Cornwell. But it isn’t what you think – he thinks the Startup visa is a good idea. The problem, he sees, is the artificial restrictions that the bill would place on the Startup visa program. Why not just let the market decide the viability of the Startup visa?

Last week the Bloom Box was officially unveiled to the world. If its proponents are correct, the Bloom Box will radically redefine how America (and the World) gets its electrical energy. The creator of the Bloom Box is K.R. Sridhar and if you listen to him on 60 Minutes, you will know why some are saying he could be the next Thomas Edison. I don’t know if he will succeed. Although I hope he does and that he is also the next Henry Ford because Henry Ford’s model T brought the car to the masses and I hope he is able to bring cheap, clean energy to the masses.

Shouldn’t American Immigration policy make it easier for future-K.R. Sridhars to come into the United States to study, stay, and contribute to American society? Shouldn’t we do whatever is possible to make sure that future scientists want to come to America?

Last February the U.S. military instituted a pilot program to allow for certain temporary immigrants to enter into the Armed Forces in key, strategically important positions. The program has been a great success and will hopefully expand in the coming years. Over a thousand recruits have enlisted through the program.

The program allows for foreign nationals living in the United States on temporary visas to enter into the military if they possess certain language abilities or certain, in demand, skill sets (such as medical physicians). The program is a win-win for both sides: the military gets highly skilled and critically important recruits while the foreign nationals get the opportunity to become U.S. citizens at an accelerated speed.

The New York Times quotes military officials as saying these recruits score 20% higher on military entrance tests than regular recruits and have significantly more education than other recruits.

Let’s hope the program is full speed ahead in the years to come.

More an idea than a location, Silicon Valley is a culture of risk and reward – go hard, go fast, go for broke. If you succeed, you reap the rewards – if you falter, you start anew with a different idea. This mindset is capitalism at its best and has garnered America many, many technological advancements. Today, Silicon Valley is synonymous with technological growth and job growth.

Many of the ideas hatched by Silicon Valley have led directly to job growth in the United States. Perhaps overlooked by many Americans, Silicon Valley’s success has been greatly influenced by immigrants. In fact, “A quarter of American technology companies have foreign-born founders, and more than half of all Silicon Valley businesses were founded by immigrants.”

In this time of economic upheaval, many in Silicon Valley are asking Congress to create a “Startup Visa” that will allow a properly positioned foreign national to enter the United States to start a company and, if successful, create American jobs. To learn more about the Startup Visa, please visit this site.

“Were it not for the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, there might be no Google.” That sentence began a recently published article in the New York Times. At first that statement seems improbable – but given the backstory that statement is most probably true. You see, thirty years ago the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society assisted the Brin family as it attempted to immigrate to the United States and escape from anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union. There was nothing extraordinary about the family, in fact it was rather ordinary as it sought to come to the United States in hopes of improving their lot. A member of that ordinary family was a six year old named Sergey Brin. Today, that same Sergey Brin is the co-founder of Google and is posed to become a titan of philanthropy as he will most certainly give back to his adopted country. (Much like the immigrant Andrew Carnegie did in the 19th Century.)

Congratulations to the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society on a job well done.

A recent opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal examined the US immigration policy on tracking foreign national scientists and researchers. The opinion piece was a harsh criticism of the current policy on foreign national students, stating “[i]t would be hard to invent a policy more counterproductive to our national interest.”

Comprehensive Immigration Reform has been pushed back to next year – or later. The longer it is delayed, the longer that the system will be broken, and the longer the US will be losing the best and brightest to the rest of the world. Let’s hope that change comes soon.

However, the United States must recognize what could have been. You see, four of those Americans made the decision many years ago that they wanted to become Americans. Four of the recipients are naturalized Americans who first came to the United States as young immigrants seeking a better life and career in the United States.

Today, if the United States does not open its doors to the young, bright minds of the world - in twenty years time the United States should expect that most of the Nobel Prizes will be going to individuals who are citizens of other countries.

President Obama has signed a stopgap bill extending the Conrad 30 and EB-5 programs until October 31, 2009. Both of these programs are expected to be extended further within the coming weeks. The Conrad 30 program allows for states to sponsor foreign national physicians who agree to work in under-served health areas. The EB-5 program allows for investors to gain permanent residency in return for investing in U.S. companies that will create or save U.S. jobs.
Both programs have been around for many, many years. However, neither program is permanent and must rely on Congressional and Presidential approval to continue.
