Immigration garnered a mere paragraph or two in President Obama’s State of the Union on Tuesday night. Given the scope of the topics discussed during the speech, it wasn’t expected that immigration (or any other subject) would garner much more than a few moments of focus. However, what was surprising about President Obama’s immigration comments [...] Silicon Valley Entrepreneurs are pursuing a “you-can’t-make-this-up” hack to the notoriously difficult U.S. immigration system. In an attempt to allow more foreign nationals to contribute to Silicon Valley, a group is seeking to buy a cruise ship and convert it into a floating campus of entrepreneurs who will live on international waters off the coast [...] A couple nights ago ABC News ran a report about how the creator of CruiseWise.com was denied a visa even though his company had been named one of the “20 Hot Silicon Valley Startups You Need to Watch,” and had hired nine Americans (and expected to hire many more in the near future). The reason [...] The United States has long been the land of opportunity for ambitious individuals who could make it big with a little bit of smarts, elbow grease and luck. Yet, the United States has no entrepreneur visa. Instead, entrepreneurs are often forced to fit their ambitions into the confines of visa categories that don’t really fit. [...] The much talked about Startup Visa has been reintroduced into Congress. The Startup visa was first introduced in 2010, and needed to be reintroduced following the January change in Congress. Whether the Startup Visa will gain any traction is yet to be seen. Congress does not currently seem interested in improving America’s much maligned immigration [...] The Startup visa, which has been discussed previously, would allow for the expansion of the EB-5 visa category to include more foreign national entrepreneurs to come to the United States and start a company that would create American jobs. However, one of the bills in the House that would create a Startup visa has drawn [...] Is there a need for immigration reform? Isn’t it easy to get a visa as a smart, young, go-getting foreign national? Surprisingly, many believe that it is easy to get a work visa in the United States if you are smart enough. As the video clip below illustrates, that isn’t the case.
