Bill Introduced to Give Gay Couples Immigration Rights

Adding to the already contentious debate surrounding Comprehensive Immigration Reform, Senator Leahy introduced a bill to the Senate that would allow for gay couples to receive the same immigration rights as married, heterosexual couples currently possess.   Currently, gay couples – even those legally married in their home state – are unable to obtain immigration rights.

If this bill will make it into law is an open question and, no doubt, will be a lightning rod when debated.  As noted by the New York Times, this issue is just one of the many heated issues that are on the table and will be apart of the larger debate about Comprehensive Immigration Reform – if it occurs this year.
Patrick Leahy
